How to spot genuine wire
Six quick checks before you buy any house wire, and a gauge check you can do with a screw gauge.
1Look for the ISI mark
Genuine wire carries the ISI mark, and the coil label shows a BIS licence number (CM/L). You can verify it on the BIS Care app.
2Read the print on the wire
Brand, size in sq mm, voltage grade (for example 1100 V) and the ISI mark should be printed clearly, again and again along the insulation.
3Check the coil length
A standard coil of house wire is 90 metres. Ask for the metre reading or measure it. A short coil is a hidden price cut.
4Bright, pure copper
Strip a little insulation. Copper should be bright, reddish-gold and soft. Silvery or grey metal inside, or a thin copper coating, is a warning sign.
5Even insulation
Insulation should be smooth, evenly thick and tight. It should not crack when bent, and the copper should sit in the centre.
6Ask for the test report
Ask for the certificate and test report of the batch. A genuine manufacturer will not hesitate. You can ask us for ours.
Gauge check, in one minute
- Cut a small piece and strip 2 to 3 cm of insulation.
- Count the thin copper strands inside. For a solid single wire, count 1.
- Measure the thickness of one strand with a screw gauge, in mm.
